Why Trust in God Begins with Knowing His Character
Many people say they trust God until pressure exposes what they truly rely upon. Scripture repeatedly shows that trust grows from knowledge of God’s character. There are many benefits to knowing God.
When you believe in God, the next step is to trust in Him.
So, what is trust from God’s perspective?
From God’s perspective, trust is a confident reliance on His character, promises, and protection, seeking refuge in Him rather than in rival systems of security. (See Trust as Refuge When Pressure Rises, Trust vs. Belief Series)
Trust answers the question of “On whom do I rely when it costs me something?” It is belief with shoes on.
So, one may ask, “Who is God?” and “How can I know Him?”
That is our thought for today.
God is Faithful to His Covenant
In Deuteronomy 7:9-10, God’s name is Yahweh, the only true and faithful God. Here, Israel is being challenged to acknowledge God’s intellectual and experiential character. By His own covenant, God rewards, over thousands of generations, those who love and obey Him.
This is a profound awakening for those entering a land with false gods and different religions. Their obedience to God’s commands would always result in a lasting blessing. Out of His faithfulness and love for His people, He lets them know in advance what they will face and the consequences of ignoring His warning.
The individuals who reject Him are subject to retribution. In the KJV version, the Scripture plainly states that He will deal with those who hate Him face to face and will not delay in expressing His disapproval.
God has an intense desire to bless those who obey Him. He has a profound love for those who are His and will not ignore evil and hatred toward Himself.
God is faithful to every covenant promise He has ever made.
God’s Ways Are Mercy and Truth
In Psalm 25:10, David acknowledges all of God’s ways, methods, and providential acts toward His people.
This does not just apply to seasons of joy but to seasons of sadness as well. Mercy and truth are paired in this verse to reveal God’s steadfast lovingkindness and grace.
Those who obey God walk in a posture of humility, trust, and alignment with Him.
God guides and disciplines those whom He loves. He is always faithful to those who love Him. We show our love for God by being obedient to His Word. Those who remain aligned with Him discover that His discipline is never separate from His mercy.
It is His mercy and grace that bring us through dark situations.
God’s Greatness is Not Separate From His Compassion
Psalm 145 is a hymn of praise that exalts God’s greatness and goodness and emphasizes that God is an eternal King.
It can be a glorious psalm to pray back to God, acknowledging His greatness and goodness to those who love and obey Him. David bears witness to God’s faithfulness, presence, and compassion for His creation.
The psalm teaches us to be grateful for everything that God has done and to teach His character to the next generation. It also calls for all of creation to give praise to God.
One of the most moving stanzas speaks of God’s love being so great for His people that when we fall, He upholds us, and when we are bowed down, God lifts us up.
Oh, how great is the name of the LORD!
God Sustains Those Who Depend on Him
Psalm 146 is an excellent way to close out today’s study.
It reminds us again not to put our trust in man (or woman) but to always put our trust in God. The words of the psalm leave us with the propensity to fall in love with God every time we read it.
His mercy, grace, faithfulness, steadfast love, and compassion are so evident in David’s description of God’s character and what He will do for those who love Him.
God is eternal, and He keeps His covenant promises. He does not change, nor does He falter in His behavior when we don’t take advantage of His eternal kingship.
It is wisdom to trust and believe in a God who saves, provides, and takes care of those who choose Him.
It may cost us something to stay in alignment with God, but from what we walked through today, the price is worth it.
