Most Christians don’t fail because they lack motivation but because they lack structure. Here’s how to live set apart, every day.
Have you noticed how easy it is to blend in and how hard it is to stand out for Christ?
Every scroll, show, and conversation seems to pull our hearts in a thousand directions. Yet God still calls us to holiness, to live differently, think differently, and love differently.
Personal Testimony
For me, this realization becomes increasingly obvious as I draw closer to God. The closer we get to God, the more the Holy Spirit has free rein to work holiness in us.
As I have drawn closer to God, I have learned something humbling and straightforward. The Holy Spirit is the One who forms holiness in us. We can’t achieve it by routine alone. If we had that ability, Christ would not have taken on flesh and gone to the cross. Scripture calls us to be holy because God is holy.
1 Peter 1:16 – because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
In today’s newsletter, I’m breaking down a 5-step system for Living Holy in an Unholy World. It doesn’t rely on willpower alone. Instead, it is based on a Spirit-led framework you can apply daily.
Why Most “Try Harder” Approaches Don’t Work
Many believers equate holiness with effort, like more Bible study, fewer mistakes, and stricter routines. Effort matters, but holiness is formed through alignment with God. Habits without alignment can lead to burnout and discouragement.
Behavior research points the same way. Consistency is more durable when motivation is tied to identity rather than obligation. The question isn’t “How can I be holy?” but “Who am I becoming in Christ?”
Step 1: Start with Alignment
Holiness begins with agreement, not achievement. It means aligning with the Word of God.
Before we can act holy, we must believe and agree with what God says about who we are.
- You are chosen, redeemed, and set apart.
- 1 Peter 2:9 – then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,
- You are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God.
- Psalm 139:14 – I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.
- You are adopted into the family of Christ as sons and daughters.
- Romans 8:14-15 – 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
- You are near the Word, in your mouth and heart.
- Romans 10:8-9 – 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
- You are secure, held together in God’s faithfulness, and never alone.
- Psalm 121:1-3 – 1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.
Here’s how to start today:
Say aloud who you are. I often remind myself, “I am the King’s kid.” Then I replace self-condemnation with Scripture affirmations. Proverbs 18:21 teaches that words carry life or death. Choose your words carefully. Make sure they align with God’s will.
(Proverbs 18:21 – Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.)
Question: Which truth above do you most need to agree with right now?
Step 2: Audit Your Atmosphere
Holiness thrives where temptation starves. Take inventory of what you watch, read, and scroll, and of the people who influence you. Noise makes it hard to sense God’s presence, and without His presence, we drift from our assignment. God keeps in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him.
(Isaiah 26:3 – “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You.)
Ask yourself:
- What voices fill my mind most often? Are they taking you away from or are they driving you to God?
- What habits or hobbies draw me closer to or pull me away from God?
- What relationships are beneficial to my walk with God, and in which ones should I lead as a better example?
- What would change if I spent as much time in His presence as I do online or in other spaces?
- When others look at me, do they see someone unashamed to belong to Christ?
Compromise, the wish to fit in, and materialism weaken our ability to discern.
(1 John 2:16 – For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world).
God has not changed, and His Word still stands.
(Psalm 37:4 – Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart).
Mini-practice: Mute one distracting source for seven days and replace it with ten minutes of Scripture and prayer.
Step 3: Anchor in Scripture
Without truth, conviction fades. Scripture keeps you steady when culture shifts. Do not just read the Bible. Absorb it. Live it. Let it interpret your moments.
Simple rhythm:
- Choose one verse each week to memorize. Learn the context of the verse and what lessons you can learn to apply to your everyday life.
- Learn its context and write one application.
- Write it on a sticky note, an index card, or on your locked screen, and keep it visible.
- Pray it back to God throughout your day.
When temptation calls, remember 1 Thessalonians 4:7: “For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.” Jesus answered the tempter with “It is written,” not clever opinions.
(Matthew 4:1-11) – 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil *took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8 Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.
So, we are to speak and apply Scripture in life situations that test our trust in God.
Proverbs 3:5-8 – 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.
He is faithful to His Word (Jeremiah 1:12; Isaiah 55:11). We are to trust Him. His Word will achieve what He intends.
Jeremiah 1:12 – Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it.”
Isaiah 55:11 – So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.
Question: What verse will you carry this week, and why does it matter to you right now?
Step 4: Apply Accountability
God designed holiness to grow in community. The early church devoted itself to teaching, fellowship, and prayer.
Acts 2:42 – They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
The world recognizes disciples of Jesus by our love for one another.
John 13:35 – By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
We are urged not to neglect gathering but to encourage one another toward good works.
Hebrews 10:23-25 – 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Confession breaks secrecy. Encouragement strengthens consistency. When we fall, we get up again by grace (Proverbs 24:16).
Proverbs 24:16 – For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again, but the wicked stumble in time of calamity.
Restore each other gently.
Galatians 6:1 – Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
Action: Choose one trusted, Spirit-led person. Agree on a weekly check-in, a shared devotional plan, and a clear place for honest prayer requests. Accountability is not control. It’s protection.
Step 5: Adjust and Continue
You won’t always get it right. Some days you’ll stumble. Others, you’ll feel on fire. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s persistence.
A short story: Early in my walk, I felt deep shame after I failed. I wanted to hide from God. Over time, I noticed a pattern. God never turned His back on me. He called me back, corrected me, and walked with me through the consequences. That awareness changed my response. Now I run toward Him, not away from Him, when I’ve walked in disobedience. Philippians 4:8-9 helps me redirect my mind to what is true, pure, and praiseworthy.
Philippians 4:8-9 – 8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Weekly review questions:
- Where did I see progress, and what contributed to its occurrence?
- Where did I drift, and once I pinpoint the distraction, is it a part of a pattern?
- What is the one change that would make the most significant difference next week?
The Holy Spirit’s conviction is not condemnation. It is loving correction that shapes holiness by many minor, daily adjustments.
When Things Go Wrong
Failure is not final. Every stumble is an invitation to return to the first step. God’s grace is not just a rescue. It is a rebuilding plan. You are being perfected, not rejected. If the enemy reminds you of your past, remind him of his future. Keep walking with God.
Your Path Ahead
Living holy in an unholy world isn’t about isolation—it’s about illumination. Your calling is not to hide your light. Instead, your calling is to let it shine. (Matthew 5:16 – Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven).
Here’s your starting sequence for the week:
- Morning identity reminder (Step 1)
- 5-minute atmosphere audit (Step 2)
- One verse memory card (Step 3)
- Accountability check-in (Step 4)
- Friday reflection journal (Step 5)
Small, consistent obedience will do what striving never will. It will transform your habits from the inside out.
